7 Reasons How Drinking Water Helps with Weight Loss

water2The European Food Safety Authority recommends that women should drink about 1.6 litres of fluid and men should drink about 2.0 litres of fluid per day. That’s about eight 200ml glasses for a woman and 10 200ml glasses for a man.

How many of you actually follow this guideline?

Most of us know that we should drink to avoid dehydration, which can cause headaches, lack of energy and poor concentration but did you know that drinking more water can help with weight loss?

Here are 7 reasons how;

  1. A study by Berlin’s Charite University found that people who drank the recommended two litres of water per day burnt off an average extra 150 calories per day this is because water stimulated the sympathetic nerve system that regulates metabolism.  The increased rate of metabolism is responsible for burning off the excess calories.
  1. Burning calories creates toxins & water plays a vital role in flushing them out of your body.
  1. Dehydration causes a reduction in blood volume; which causes a reduction in the supply of oxygen to your muscles; which can make you feel tired and when we feel tired we are less likely to be active reducing our fat burning capacity.
  1. Water helps maintain muscle tone by assisting muscles in their ability to contract, and lubricates your joints. This helps reduce muscle and joint soreness when exercising improving your ability to work harder and burn more calories.
  1. Fibre can be helpful to your digestive system, but without adequate fluids it can cause constipation instead of helping to eliminate it making you feel sluggish, less active and can slow down your metabolism.
  1. Drinking water before or with a meal may make you feel full sooner and therefore more satisfied eating less.
  1. Drinking water instead of other beverages such as soft drink, juice and even tea and coffee (if you add sugar) means you will be consuming less calories.
